8 Leather Jacket Hacks You Should Know

If you’re looking for a stylish jacket that’s guaranteed to withstand the hands of time, you should consider investing in leather. Leather jackets have been around for over a century, and there’s no signs of this trend slowing down any time soon. On the contrary, there’s been a growing demand for leather jackets, due largely in part to their unique style and ultra-comfortable texture. But if you’re planning to buy a new leather jacket, you should familiarize yourself with the following “hacks.” Store in a Closet with a Humidifier Being that we’re currently in the middle of the winter season, many people are experiencing dry air — a common characteristic of this time of year. The dry air, however, can wreak havoc on leather jackets, making them stiff, brittle and susceptible to damage. This is due to the fact that leather has thousands upon thousands of small pores, which are constantly releasing or absorbing moisture depending on the humidity in the surrounding environment. If you store your leather jacket in a closet with a low relative humidity level, it will likely experience these and/or other problems. To prevent this from happening, place a humidifier in your closet and set it to 40-50%. This is a happy medium in which the air is not too dry but not too moist, protecting your leather jacket from damage. Keep it Soft with a Conditioning Product Another hack that everyone who owns a leather jacket should know is to keep soft by using a leather conditioning product. It’s not uncommon for leather jackets — or other leather garments and accessories — to become...

Leather Long Coats 101

Not all leather jackets are “typical” length. While many stop around the waist (standard length), others extend to the knees or past. The latter, known as leather long coats, have become a popular choice among men and women alike. They offer the same classic style as traditional leather coats, but with a unique touch that’s simply not found elsewhere. If you’re thinking of investing in a leather long coat, though, there are a few things you should know. So, keep reading to learn more about leather long coats and how to choose the right one. Looking Back at the History of Long Coats Long coats have been around for hundreds of years, with reports indicating that some of the first styles originated during the 16th century. At this time, coats, jackets and gowns extending to the knees and below were worn to establish social status, or for military uniform purposes. It wasn’t until the 17th century, however, when long coats became available to all social classes. This sparked a newfound trend for the garment, with people of all ages and social statuses seeking to wear them. Even today, the long coat remains a popular choice of outwear, for both comfort and style. Long Coat vs Top Coat: What’s the Difference? Although they share some similarities, long coats and top coats are two different garments. Top coats are typically made of a lighter fabric or material, while long coats are made with a heavier fabric (e.g. leather). This makes long coats the preferred choice for the otherwise cold winter months. If you plan on wearing it for protection from the...

9 Reasons Why Leather Trousers Rock

9 Reasons Why Leather Trousers Rock

Not convinced that leather trousers are worth buying? Whether you’re a man, woman, young or old, leather trousers are the perfect style of pants. Today, we’re going to explore just a few of the reasons why leather trousers rock. Warmer than Denim and Cotton Fabrics With winter officially here, many men and women are looking to update their wardrobe with cold-weather clothing. After all, not all fabrics are suitable for use during the winter season. This is one area in which leather trousers excel, however. Leather is made from tanned animal hide, usually being cow. Conventional wisdom should tell you that animal hide such as this is thicker and warmer than traditional fabrics like cotton and denim. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you should avoid wearing cotton or denim, but you’ll reap the benefits of increased warmth and comfort when choosing leather trousers during the otherwise bone-chilling winter months. Super Soft Unless you’ve worn a pair of genuine leather trousers before, you might be surprised to learn just how soft they are. Leather is one of the softest, most supple fabrics on the planet. Faux/fake leather attempts to recreate this softness, but it ultimately fall short. There’s just no comparison to genuine leather. So, if you want a pair of trousers that are super soft, buy a pair of leather trousers. Be warned, though, after buying your first pair of leather trousers you’ll probably come back for more. Repels Stains Like all materials and fabrics, even leather can stain under the right (or wrong) conditions. With that said, however, leather is naturally more stain-resistant than other fabrics. Again, this...
Why Leather Cracks (and How to Prevent it)

Why Leather Cracks (and How to Prevent it)

Leather is one of the most prized textiles in the world. Made from tanned animal hide (usually cow’s hide), it offers several unique characteristics that simply aren’t found in other fabrics and materials. Leather is soft, supple, strong, smooth and ultra comfortable. All of these reasons make it the preferred choice of material for jackets, coats and other forms of outerwear. But leather doesn’t come without its own caveats, one of which is the susceptibility to cracking. So, why does leather crack and what steps can you take to prevent it? Before we begin, it’s important to note that leather has thousands upon thousands of small “pores” on its surface. While invisible to the naked eye, these pores play a key role in its characteristics. Much like wood, the pores on leather are constantly releasing or absorbing moisture, depending on the surrounding humidity level. When leather is placed in a humid environment, the excess moisture vapor in the air will settle on the surface, at which point it will be absorbed into the pores. On the other hand, when leather is placed in a dry environment, the opposite happens: moisture from its pores are released into the air; thus, the leather becomes drier. This is a natural phenomenon that usually causes no reason for concern — not unless the humidity surrounding leather is either too high or too low. Now, if you’ve ever come across an old leather garment, you may have noticed how it developed small cracks. This doesn’t happen when leather is properly stored and cared for, but it’s still something that owners need to be aware...
