Choose Genuine Leather
If you’re going to wear a leather jacket, make sure it’s made of 100% genuine leather and not some synthetic material. While synthetic materials may look similar, they don’t offer the same characteristic look and feel as the real thing. The only real benefit of choosing a synthetic “faux” leather jacket is the cost. They typically cost less than their genuine counterpart, making them an attractive choice for consumers on a budget. If you can afford it, though, you should choose a genuine leather jacket. The soft texture, supple feeling, and overall classic look is simply unmatched. And best of all, genuine leather jackets retain their value, whereas faux leather jackets do not.
Go Layered
You really can’t go wrong with a layered look when wearing a leather jacket. Leather jackets typically feature just a single color (although some may feature multiple colors). As such, there’s really nothing to break up the color or design — not without adding another layer or two, at least. As long weather permits, try creating a layered look consisting of a leather jacket, shirt and maybe another shirt. Doing so allows you to include more than just a single color into your look. If you’re wearing a brown leather jacket, for instance, perhaps you could wear a white undershirt with a slightly lighter (or darker) brown shirt over it. This layered look is simply unbeatable, and best of all, it’s incredibly easy to achieve. Feel free to experiment with different layers to see what works and what doesn’t.
Match Shoes with Jacket
Another tip that’s particularly beneficial when wearing a leather jacket is to match it with your shoes or boots. If you are wearing a brown leather jacket, try pairing it with brown shoes. Or if you are wearing a black leather jacket, pair it with black shoes — you get the idea. The concept of matching outwear with shoes isn’t new by any means, as fashion experts have long recommended doing this. Matching your shoes with your jacket allows for a more cohesive appearance in which your garment flows together. If you don’t match these two garments, it could clash while offering no real benefits to your look.
Rock the Fade
Over time, it’s not uncommon for leather to fade, creating a slightly more distinct look. Some people may turn their heads at the thought of wearing a faded leather jacket, but others actually prefer it. There’s a good reason why some people prefer the look of faded leather: it’s truly unique and one-of-a-kind, allowing individuals to set themselves apart from the crowd. So if your leather jacket happens to fade, keep rocking it. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with faded leather as long as it’s properly maintained and care for on a regular basis.
Go Red
Leather jackets are available in more colors than just brown and black. Granted, these are by far the most popular choices, but there’s been a growing trend surrounding alternative colors. If you ever watched the 1990s hit movie The Fight Club, you may recall Brad Pitt’s character wearing a burgundy-red leather jacket. This stylish color offers just enough flair to turn heads while still maintaining a simple look. Furthermore, you can still wear either brown or black with a red leather jacket, which is another reason why this is an excellent color.
Another excellent alternative to a brown or black leather jacket is beige. Some people may argue that beige is essentially a form of brown, but it’s much lighter. As such, beige is an excellent alternative if you want something a bit different and more unique than traditional leather colors like brown and black.
The Casual Look
There are countless ways to dress with a leather jacket, one of the most popular being casual. Achieving a casual look is pretty simple and straight-forward with a leather jacket. Assuming you have a traditional, 100% leather jacket, try pairing it with a single-color t-shirt and jeans. The combination of jeans, a t-shirt and a leather jacket is the ultimate casual look. Of course, there are dozens of other ways to achieve a casual look with a leather jacket. You could always sport a basic polo shirt with jeans and a jacket, or you could even wear khakis or chinos instead of jeans. The great thing about casual looks is the sheer versatility and near-limitless freedom it offers.
Check the Size
Don’t underestimate the importance of choosing the right size when shopping for a leather jacket. Wearing an oversized jacket isn’t exactly flattering, no matter how much time and attention you put into your looks. Oversized jackets tend to create something known as the “clothes hanger” effect in which it appears that your body is a clothes hanger with the jacket hanging off it. To prevent this from happening, take the time to choose a leather jacket in the appropriate size. You may to do a little searching, but a well-fitting jacket is a smart investment that will pay off in the long run.
Keep Your Pockets Empty… or Almost Empty
Assuming your leather jacket has pockets, don’t fill them with an unnecessary amount of items. You can still use them, but they shouldn’t be so full that they puff out.
Slim Fit
Like most shirts and jackets, leather jackets are designed with different fits. Rather than choosing a “relaxed” fit, however, you should stick with a slim fit. As the name suggests, slim-fit leather jackets have a slimmer fit, allowing them to hug more closely to your body. In doing so, they make you look taller and slimmer, which is something that many men prefer in their clothes.
